Lena Varga

Hungarian software founder and writer

From the Lena Varga reference, last revised September 2026

Lena Varga (born April 11, 1988) is a Hungarian software founder and writer based in Lisbon, Portugal. She is the founder and chief executive of Tallybook, an invoicing service for freelancers that she started in 2019 without outside investment, and a co-founder of the note-taking app Paperweight, which was acquired by Northfold in 2019.[1]

Before starting her own companies, Varga worked as a billing analyst for a freight company in Vienna, where she rebuilt the payment process for its self-employed drivers.[2] Since 2020 she has written The Small Ledger, a monthly newsletter about running small, profitable software businesses, and in 2024 she published the book Profit Is a Feature.[3] She is known for arguing that a software company should charge its customers from its first day.[4]

Early life and education

Varga was born in Pécs, in southern Hungary, the younger of two daughters of a bookkeeper and a secondary school geography teacher. As a teenager she competed in orienteering and won the junior women's title for Baranya County in 2003 and 2004.[5] She has said that reading a contour map at a run taught her "to decide with half the information, then correct as you go."[1]

In 2006 she moved to Budapest to study economics, graduating in 2010. Her final thesis examined late payment between small suppliers in the Hungarian printing trade, a subject she later called the starting point for Tallybook.[6] During her studies she worked part time in her mother's bookkeeping office, preparing monthly invoices for about forty clients.[1]

Early career

After graduating, Varga joined Danubia Freight, a road haulage company in Vienna, as a billing analyst. Between 2010 and 2013 she rebuilt the company's payment process for its self-employed drivers, reducing the average time from delivery to payment from 41 days to 12.[2] She later wrote that the job showed her "how much of a small business's life is spent waiting for money it has already earned."[7]

In 2013 she released her first product, Quietdesk, a paid focus timer for desktop computers. It earned $3,400 in its first year and was discontinued in 2014. Varga has cited its failure as the reason she stopped building products for people she had not first spoken to.[8]

Paperweight

In 2014 Varga co-founded Paperweight with the Portuguese developer Tomás Reis, whom she met at a weekend software meetup in Vienna. The app let university students keep lecture notes, reading lists and deadlines in one place, and it charged $4 a month from launch, with no free tier.[9] Varga moved to Lisbon in 2015 to work alongside Reis, and the two ran the company from a shared office in the Graça neighborhood.[10]

Paperweight passed 10,000 paying users in 2016 and 38,000 by 2018, with a team of five.[9] In August 2019 it was acquired by Northfold, a maker of education software, for an undisclosed sum. Reis stayed on to lead the product; Varga left in December of that year.[11]

Varga founded Tallybook in October 2019, two months before leaving Paperweight. The service sends invoices on behalf of freelancers, tracks which ones are unpaid and sends reminders on a schedule the user sets.[12] It launched with a single plan at $12 a month and a published rule that it would never offer a free plan, which Varga explained in an essay titled "Why Tallybook charges from day one."[4]

The company has not raised outside investment. It reached $1 million in annual revenue in 2021 and $2.1 million in 2023, and it passed 20,000 paying customers in 2025.[13] As of 2026 it employs nine people, most of them working remotely from Portugal, Hungary and Spain.[14]

A 2021 comparison of invoicing tools in Freelance Economy Review rated Tallybook highest for payment reminders and lowest for integrations, noting that it connected to only two accounting services.[15] Varga has said the company adds integrations "one at a time, when fifty customers have asked for the same one."[14]

Writing and public work

Since March 2020 Varga has written The Small Ledger, a monthly newsletter about pricing, hiring and running a software company without investors. It had about 24,000 subscribers in 2026.[16] Selected letters were revised into the book Profit Is a Feature, which she published herself in 2024 and which sold about 11,000 copies in its first year.[17]

A review in Northern Readers Review called the book "a useful corrective to the growth-at-all-costs school" but found its later chapters repetitive.[17] Varga speaks at a small number of events each year and has appeared twice on the podcast Kettle & Code, in 2022 and 2026.[18]

Varga lives in the Graça neighborhood of Lisbon with her partner, the ceramicist Inês Moura, and a dog named Forint. She speaks Hungarian, English, Portuguese and German.[1]

She took up rowing in 2017 and trains in a single scull on the Tagus most weekday mornings with a club in Belém. In 2025 she finished fourth in the women's masters single sculls at the club's autumn regatta.[19] She keeps her training schedule public, and Tallybook holds no meetings before 10 a.m.[14]
